The 100/17 howitzer was fielded by the Italian Army during the campaign in North Africa. But first saw service as a specialist heavy mountain gun by the Austro-Hungarian forces during the First World War. At the beginning of the 20th century companies such as Skoda and Krupp were leading the world in artillery technology; many of the European nations equipped their armies with guns from the Skoda factories.

Since it was originally designed as a mountain gun, the howitzer could be broken down for transport via pack animals. However, the trail proved too heavy for the requirements of most armies and lead to the design of a new trail, the 100mm houfrice vz 14.

The 100/17 howitzer proved a reliable weapon and remained in prolonged service during World War Two due to the sheer numbers of spare parts produced and the huge stockpiles of ammunition. While used heavily in North Africa, the French designed 105/28 was the preferred artillery piece for the Italian forces that served on the Eastern Front fighting the Soviets.
