The Ordnance QF 4.5" Howitzer was a veteran of the fighting in World War I and was still in use with the BEF in France, and the 8th Army in the Desert during World War II.

Its powerful HE shell was capable of digging out even the most stubborn enemies and was used in tandem with batteries of OQF 18 pdr guns.
