During the 1930s, NATI (the Russian Institute for Tractor Technology) began the development of a compact artillery tractor capable of towing the light guns of the Red Army. Accepted for production in 1936, the T-20 Komsomolyets (pronounced kom-som-olets, meaning Young Communists) served as the prime mover in the Red Army during the Winter War and into the early stages of World War Two.
Powered by a GAZ-M 50 horsepower engine, the T-20 Komsomolyets utilised the suspension of the T-38 amphibious tank and was manned by a two-man crew consisting of a driver and a gunner who manned the hull mounted 7.62mm DT machine-gun. While the driver and gunner were protected by 10mm of armour plate, the only protection for the six passengers (three each side) who occupied the positions in the rear of the vehicle was an optional canvas screen that offered little more than shelter from the elements.
While its intended purpose was towing gun around the battlefield, the Komsomolyets pressed into service a as light tank during the early stages of Operation Barbarossa. It was need Red Army’s need for more light tanks which saw the manufacture of Komsomolyets cease in July 1941. However, it remained in service with the Red Army in the absence of other tractors or transports until wartime attrition gradually took its toll.
