  After invading the Soviet Union, the Germans were keen to make use of the spoils of war left behind by the Red Army. Thousands of Soviet tanks littered the battlefield during the summer of 1941 and the Germans were keen to salvage whatever they could; however, many of these tanks proved beyond repair.
  
  The Soviets had made use of tank turret emplacements on the Mototov and Stalin lines and as the tide of war begun to turn against the Germans, the begun to use the these spoils against their former owners. As early as 1942 a timber construction designed to mount the T-34 turret begun to appear in German manual of field fortifications.
  
  A majority of these T-34 turrets were modified to take the German 5cm KwK L/42 gun; the reasons behind the change was due to a lack of a stable ammunition supply for the Soviet gun and the fact that the 5cm KwK L/42 had been phased out of frontline service and both the gun and supplies of ammunition were plentiful. Only a small number of T-34 turrets that kept the 7.62cm guns.
